On the theory it is better to be safe than sorry, you can submit your joint venture to the IRS and request a private ruling in advance to confirm its tax treatment. Even if it gives you confirmation, the IRS will continue to scrutinize your actual operations to make sure you are following the rules.

A FINAL WORD

This is as far as I can—or should—take you in a book. Joint ventures between commercial producers and nonprofit companies are a viable way of presenting theater, and certainly many important works have been coming out of them for decades. However, be careful, and create and operate your venture in the right way.
